What to Do If Your Home has a Natural Gas Leak

Knowing what to do in the event of a gas leak is just as crucial as being able to see the warning signs and symptoms of one. If you think you have a gas leak, follow these instructions:

  1. Exit the building. The home should be quickly evacuated, and everyone within should reassemble in a predetermined safe location. This reduces the amount of gas you are exposed to and puts you away from the house in case the gas leak starts to burn.
  2. DO NOT open the windows if you smell gas inside your home! It is combustible when natural gas contains between 5 and 15 percent air and is subjected to an ignition source.
  3. Call for help. As soon as everyone is outside and away from the house.
