Fireplace Safety
Christmas customs often involve a festively adorned hearth, but the heat that a gas fireplace emits might cause neighboring combustibles to catch fire.
- Establish a 3-foot safety zone around your fireplace and keep everything combustible, such as throw pillows, blankets, holiday décor, and wrapping paper, outside of it. Playing in this area is not permitted for kids.
- Invest in safety screens or hearth guards that can withstand a fire to keep people and objects away from a hot fireplace.
- Use fire-resistant ornaments on the mantle, and don’t let them hang. When there is a fire, take off your stockings.
When you leave the house or go to bed, turn off the fireplace.
