Fall weather offers colder temperatures and leaf-peeping
You might be redecorating your outdoor living area with autumnal accents or getting ready for Halloween with entertaining decorations in a few days.
Follow these suggestions to avoid hitting your natural gas meter while you start decorating:
- For routine maintenance, emergency management, periodic safety checks, and meter readings, your Gas Company staff needs to have simple access to your meter.
- Keep any planting that obstructs access or visibility away from your meter. Trim any bushes or plants close to the meter.
- Do not hang anything on the meter and keep the area around it free. So, no fake cobwebs, pumpkins, or other fall-themed decorations.
- Do not build decking or fencing that blocks access to the meter.
- Instruct children not to play near the meter or on utility piping.
- If snow and ice decide to make an early appearance this fall, use a broom to delicately sweep off the meter by hand.
- Gas Companies also emphasize that rods, stakes, fence posts for landscaping or decoration can puncture service lines.
- If you’re planning on doing any digging before the ground freezes, no matter how minor, Missouri law requires a call to 811 at least 3 business days prior to have your utility lines marked.
