Tips for Handling a Natural Gas Leak in Your House

If you suspect a gas leak, adhere to following guidelines:

Get out of the structure.

  • Immediately leave the area and evacuate everyone from the house or structure.
    • Everyone inside should promptly leave the house and reunite in a designated safe area. This places you outside of the house in case the gas ignites.

If you smell gas in your house.

  • Avoid using anything that could cause a spark, such as cell phones, light switches, or garage door openers. These can cause the gas to ignite.
    • DO NOT open the windows! Leave the home immediately.

In addition.

  • Call your local natural gas provider from a safe location.
  • Call 911 if gas lines or equipment are severed, resulting in blowing gas.
