Reminder of Gas Safety
Natural gas is odorless until we add mercaptan, an odorant comparable to rotten eggs, to help locate leaks. If you smell natural gas or have a natural gas emergency, evacuate immediately and call your local natural gas provider.
Here are some tips to follow.
In the kitchen:
- Never use your oven or stove to heat your home.
- Check to see if the flames on your gas range are crisp, silent, and blue.
- Follow the manufactures recommendations when cleaning range tops.
- Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher near your kitchen.
Around appliances:
- Air filters in heating systems should be cleaned or replaced per manufacturer recommendations.
- Furnaces, vents, and appliance hookups should be inspected by a qualified person.
- Examine the air intakes, drainpipes, controls, and flue of the water heater to ensure they are clear.
- Maintain sufficient ventilation and follow the manufacturer’s directions when using a space heater.
Outside around the house:
- Keep gas meters clear of vegetation, trash, snow, and other impediments.
