Every year on August 11th
Every year on August 11th, National 811 Day is marked to promote awareness of the importance of safe digging. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation leads an annual campaign to encourage people to call 8-1-1, a toll-free number available to all citizens, before beginning any excavation project.
811 Day expands every year to encourage more people to call before they dig. You might see an uptick in 811 mentions in the news and on social media during the month. Please spread the word about this important message: no matter how modest the project may seem, call 811 before beginning any form of underground digging.
Missouri 811 is a non-profit organization that serves as a communication link between utility companies and individuals planning to dig. Missouri law requires that any person excavating notify Missouri 811 at least three but not more than ten working days before beginning work, except in the case of an emergency.
